So the curry is pretty dang good here, the only downside? the price, just a little high for me. We had the yellow curry with tofu and it was pretty dang good. The place is worth trying, just keep an eye on your wallet.

Exceeded my expectations! From the service to the dishes served, amazing.

Every time we've been there the food has been delicious! The wait staff is attentive and handled their one screw up admirably well.

This place is a great addition to Sugarhouse! The atmosphere is great; not too loud, but relaxed. I loved the salt & pepper shakers! Everyone working was so friendly. The portions were much larger than I had expected. I was pretty hungry and I still brought some home. I loved the drunken noodles! I will definitely be going back soon.

Pretty good food. No red or green curry which was disappointing but overall ok.

Really good Thai food with a cool atmosphere.

I've been repeatedly impressed with the downtown location (350 W 300 S, across from the park), and the new location in Sugarhouse is just as good. The prices are higher for dinner than lunch ($11-14 vs. $5-9), but there's lots more seating space and it's in a really nice area for a walk. We strolled through Sugarhouse Park, across the street, after dinner, and it was an extremely enjoyable experience. I loved the pad thai and garlic/black pepper entrees, and they were a decent size for dinner. Try the daily curries, the drunken noodles, and the new curry puffs too. You won't be disappointed!

I went to the Sugarhouse location for the first time tonight and found it pretty disappointing. This is white person Thai -- so Americanized that it totally lacks the heat and background flavors that make Thai food interesting and delicious. The menu is very limited. Most of the curries come with only one choice of meat (beef Masaman, salmon panang, chicken yellow...). Green curry is not on the menu (WTF?!!). I'm giving it 2 stars based on the freshness of the food and acceptable service, nothing more. We ordered tofu drunken noodles and chili basil tofu. The dishes both lacked any heat whatsoever. The portions are extremely small, especially considering the high prices. We had no appetizers and ordered one wine and one beer. Our tab was $42 and we both left feeling hungry. If you're a true lover of Thai food, Salt Lake has a plethora of authentic Thai restaurants that offer great food at reasonable prices. If you're venturing into Thai food for the first time and are flavor-averse, Ekamai might just be the option you're looking for.

They don't deliver from the Sugarhouse spot...instead, go through a third party for a whopping charge of $7.75. Bummer

This is a review for the takeout available at Ekamai. I think this branch provides delicious food, but beware that takeout is not the same as at the Pioneer Park location. I was expecting food to be ready (like the lunch menu with a few curries to choose from or drunken noodles made to order). However, at dinnertime, takeout can only be ordered from their regular sit-down menu. I wanted egg rolls but they were not available. You also can't use your 10 combo punch card at dinner. Likewise, the drunken noodles were a few dollars more than they normally are at lunchtime even though the portion wasn't much bigger. The food was ready very quickly when I placed my order (at 5:15 pm on a Sunday evening) so I was very pleased about that. I highly recommend the Massaman curry with beef shortribs, which is the same as their lunch curry but with fancier meat. However, I was not expecting to spend double the price of the lunch for the same food. Nonetheless, I still think Ekamai has the best Thai food in the SLC downtown area.

This Thai is as good as it gets in SLC. I was so impressed. It's not too Americanized: not too heavy, saucy or sweet. Service was great too. Nice atmosphere: quaint and intimate.

Is one friends finally got my husband to try thai when we were on a trip to St. George and he fell in love. We have since tried a handful of places in Northern Utah that just made us so disappointed...until Ekamai. It was SO GOOD! The crying tiger meat literally just pulled apart when I picked it up with my fingers. Both the yellow and massumen curry were so good and come as large servings. The Pad Thai did don't have as much food, but it was fresh and didn't have any funky flavors like others we have tried. We got the brown rice and all loved it. A little pricey but know you are getting great food! Can't wait to go back

With so many great options for Thai in town don't waste your time here. I ordered the Pad Thai and Drunken Noodles and both were very bland they were also super small portions(still hungry after eating both). Don't bother with the delivery option while the driver did get here at the front end of the window given they mixed up what number to call to let me know to go outside to grab it. I hope that this place was just having an all around off night and they aren't this terrible usually but at this point i would not recommend this place to anyone. Oh and this place charges more than any other Thai place i have been to in SLC.

really excellent little place. great food, loved that service. had the green curry chicken, so i'll have to recommend that and try some other dishes sometime.

We didn't have to wait for a table for two and the food came out pretty quick. We got a window seat overlooking the park which was nice. The decor is cozy and slightly upscale, although a bit eclectic. The Pad Thai was delicious and I ate the entire thing! Not the best I've ever had, but certainly in the top 5!

Just finished dinner here. I have to say the experience was very disappointing. We ordered chicken satay and it was extremely dry. It made me wonder if the chicken had been cooked prior to our order then microwaved. We also had order lard chicken and it was literally drenched in lime and fish sauce. When we asked the manager about it, we were told that it's supposed to have fish sauce in it. Duh.. Of course it's supposed to have fish sauce in it. The issue with our dish was the overwhelming taste of the fish sauce. We also ordered three other dishes, which were mediocre to less than average. The carrots used for decoration were dried and withered. The only nice thing were the waitresses, they were attentive and nice. Needless to say we will not be coming back to this place again.

Finally made my way to this place. There were 3 of us in total, my buddy opted for the buffet while we ordered off the menu. The buffet looked like flavorless food that was watered down and leftover from the night before. We ordered 3 things to share, the Tom Kha Gai soup, the green curry, and the salmon with penang curry. It is very unfortunate that a Thai restaurant doesn't use much coconut milk in their curries. Not sure if they are trying to save money or don't know the proper way to prepare curry? The only thing that was remotely decent was the penang curry, it was thick and had some okay flavor. I see a lot of excellent reviews on here and not sure if my taste buds are off on this place? I will stick to Tea rose diner and Simply Thai for decent food in the Wasatch Front.

Omg Thai food.. I lived in Thailand for 2 1/2 months so I'm a little picky when it comes to Thai food! This place is amazing and the owner is from Thailand. (Woot) He is awesome. I love the drunken noodles, yellow curry chicken, Massaman curry. For dessert get the coconut mango sticky rice! Can't go wrong at this place. Also love the Thai iced tea.

Okay, Sugarhousers: did you know this location of Ekamai has half-price appetizers from 5pm-7pm??!! This has redeemed my somewhat low opinion of this restaurant. I came here a couple times when they first opened, and while I really enjoyed their curry lunch special, the second time I returned the prices had leaped and its food seemed a little too trendy and not authentic enough (the IKEA furniture and awkward decorating didn't help). I hadn't been back until tonight, when we joined some friends for their "happy hour" half-price appetizers. Decor is still strange, and the servers' dress code is a little hard to interpret (one was wearing short-alls, another a stretchy mini-skirt that seemed scarily too short), but their menu seems to have expanded significantly and has some interesting options. While it's still a bit pricey in my eyes, my taste buds were happy enough from the dishes we tried tonight that I'd return to try more of the menu. Of the appetizers we tried, loved these: - Chicken Satay - I know, I know, it's the standard grilled chicken on skewers (four meaty ones) with peanut sauce, but seriously, people, it was so well executed that it definitely was the best I've had in a long time. Perfectly juicy chicken that was seasoned so well I could've eaten it without the peanut sauce (*gasp!*) though I would never do that because their peanut sauce was rich and amazing. The "cucumber salad" served with it was nothing more than one shaving of paper-thin cucumber and a few springs of julienned carrots in some sweet chili sauce - slightly disappointing but the chicken was so good I can overlook it. - Fresh Spring Rolls (lettuce, carrots, cilantro, rice vermicelli, shrimp) - generous serving and really lovely presentation (6 small rolls - 3 large ones cut in half, it seemed - stacked Jenga-style). Served with a slightly different peanut sauce than the satay (my husband thought too sweet), and a sweet chili-type sauce - both good but maybe too sugary. Wish they'd served the same peanut sauce as the satay. Liked these: - Curry Dumplings (6 steamed pork and veggie dumplings with a fun, not-too-spicy green curry sauce) - pretty run-of-the-mill for dumplings. Not the best I've had but good. The curry sauce was good and points for the ingenuity, but it is just a strange pairing for dumplings. Unhappy that we ordered this: - Larb Chicken (minced chicken salad served in lettuce cups) - I was (wrongly, I see now) expecting something similar to the lettuce wraps served in most Chinese restaurants now, but beyond my surprise at the difference, we were just really unhappy with this dish. It was sour with some type of vinegar sauce and had very little flavor otherwise (plus the sour, tuna-like smell was a big turnoff), and the presentation was unappealing - ground chicken that looked a bit like cat food, not served in iceberg lettuce cups, but tiny slices of romaine hearts that were awkward to scoop up the chicken with. Yuck yuck yuck. I rarely don't want to eat something at a restaurant, but I pushed this one aside immediately. Good, attentive, friendly service. Accommodating for our kids - high chairs, boosters, water cups with lids (always give points for that!) Nice location across from Sugarhouse park, easy parking in a lot behind the restaurant or on the adjoining street. Clean restaurant and restrooms (something you don't always see in the more "authentic" places). Even the dishes we tried that were good were still, sadly, not great - they lack the extra details that all-around great Thai places have, but I'd come here again, especially if it's for these killer deals on appetizers (just skip the Larb Chicken next time).

It takes a lot of patience to serve my family & this place can handle it. The staff is kind & quick & checked on us often. I highly recommend the drunken noodles.

I grew up in SLC, but do not currently live here. Whenever I come for a visit though, I MUST go to Ekamai. I think they have the best pad thai and drunken noodles than any of the places back in LA. I have a very unhealthy relationship with how much I crave Ekamai's noodles. For all of the low ratings on the buffet, I can't help you there. I've never had Ekamai's buffet but honestly, no one should ever eat buffet and expect it to be high quality food jus' sayin'. The service at ekamai can also be a hit or miss. You either get a waiter who really knows their stuff, or one who wanders the dining room w/ your food in hand. Nevertheless, the food is too good to hold that against them! If you're in the mood for some yummy thai noodles and curry, ekamai is where you should be.

I like this place. I have been a fan of their other location for years. The sugarhouse location adds a few nice touches and expands the menu a bit, but the core is the same as the other location, so if you've eaten there, you'll like this. The whole point of this review is to say the ginger creme brûlée is out of this world amazing. I would go so far to say its one of the top 10 desserts available in the state. Really, it's that good.

First impression always remains the strongest.. It was my first time having dinner here, and I was expecting some good-quality Thai food from the good reviews I've heard from others. Unfortunately, the moment my spring rolls came out, I immediately thought in my head that this place was overrated. I ordered my spring rolls without cilantro and when they came out, I realized there were only shrimp, carrots, white noodles, and chopped white lettuce. As far as I know, spring rolls are supposed to be abundant in green, leafy vegetables. I wouldn't even call what I had a "spring roll." My mom ordered some pad Thai noodles and I tried them, all I could really taste is just pure sweetness and fat from the oils. The ingredients used in the foods are solely for texture and munching. Unless you like that kind of food, my review wouldn't be of much help. FYI, I've been to plenty of Thai restaurants. This was just not the place for me.

We shared Massamun Curry Beef Short Ribs and Garlic and Black Pepper Salmon. The ribs were cooked to fork tender with delicious, unique flavors. We will return for this award winning dish! The salmon had typical Asian flavors, which were fine, but nothing unique to return for. We will try the dumplings or noodles next time. The service was outstanding and a welcome respite after a busy week.

I been there a few times for breakfast and lunch. Not a bad Thai food the staff seem nice, food was just OK. The place I have to say is clean and they have outdoor dinning.

The three dishes ordered: Tofu pad thai, cashew nut wok, and Pad See Ew were all very tasty I had the tofu pad thai and was amazed at how fresh and delicate the tofu was. Pad thai sauce can be very hit-and-miss depending on which Thai restaurant you go to. Ekamai's sauce was flavorful without being overwhelming. My dinner companions commented on how tasty their food was, especially the brown rice that was served with the Cashew Nut Wok. The best part of dinner was dessert. We each ordered a dessert: Ginger Creme Brulee (brought to the table first and so delicious that it was finished before the other desserts arrived), coconut cake, and mango with sticky rice. The creme brulee was perfect. The sugary crackle was flavored with ginger and was a delightful, almost surprising, taste treat. The next best dessert was the mango with sticky rice. I was so intrigued with the presentation that I took a picture of it. Not only was it delicious but it was beautiful to look at. The coconut cake was fairly pedestrian but it was consumed in short order so it couldn't have been too bad. Ekamai is a very nice used-to-be-a-house restaurant right across the street from Sugarhouse Park. Great atmosphere, very pleasant and polite wait staff, and tasty food.

A small cute space with a small patio for the summer. The food is on point, and service was attentive. I had the grilled calamari salad and fresh spring rolls. The dressing on the salad was very good, and the calamari was grilled perfectly without it being chewy and dried out. I'm just happy that there's a good thai place in my neighborhood.

Ordered from the downtown location near Rio Grande... Just tried this tonight via the Yelp "order on line app" . Way cool way to order, but I was highly disappointed with the taste and quality of the food. I've eaten plenty of Thai - and this was the blandest, tasteless, tough Thai. I ordered three different dishes: 1) Massaman beef 2) A chicken dish (but got two massaman beefs) 3) Pepper steak and rice. Beef was tough, and the massaman's were flavorless. Prices was about $5.95 per dish - and the portions were good for one person. The complaint isn't there, but with the food itself. I won't be back.

Really good thai. Pad thai, curry (green), chicken skewers were all good. Drunkin noodles were not great, ok but would not order again, especially since I like all the other entrees. i did have the customize several dishes which they did successfully. We only did take away and delivery so I cannot comment on ambiance. Both delivery and pick-up were quick and easy.

There's are tons of Thai restaurants but non quite as unique and awesome as this place. The owners name is Woot. Yep Woot what an awesome name and he lives up to it. The Tom Yum Koong is spicy and loaded with super high quality shrimp. just enough tang in it to give you a food buzz. Curry dumplings with the most amazing green curry sauce. Steamed so it's light and perfect. The Crying tiger! A grilled rib eye. This steak is better than many top tier steakhouses. Juicy and served with tamarind sauce and asparagus. This is the best fusion thai I have ever experienced. Say hi to Woot!!

I am a frequent patron of the downtown Ekami and have never been disappointed. I had been to the Sugarhouse location several times as well and had similar experiences until last night. I'm basing my stars off my overall Ekami visits and not letting one flaw taint my review. We arrived at 8:30, they close at ten so plenty of time to enjoy a meal...or so we thought. The place was packed when we arrived and cleared out to only us. By that time they were moving wood tables and chairs along the wood floor which was very loud and distracting. Made us feel unwelcome. When they delivered our food they only brought 2 of 3 entrees and did not mention the remaining meal. About 5 minutes later we were able to get the attention of someone who brought it out a few minutes later. I ordered pineapple shrimp fried rice. It was fine but had zero pineapple. It was loaded with tomatoes and tons of onions....I love onions and it was a bit too much for me. I also wonder why tomato is in a fried rice? The menu stated raisins and cashews but neither were present. Our dumplings with green curry sauce and my friends drunken noodles were very delish. I'm hoping this was just an off night. I love this location and their food so am willing to look aside my one bad time for now.

I struggled in determining whether to low or high ball the rating. Overall, very good. The service is 5 stars, waiters were nice and attentive and food was served promptly (it wasn't too crowded but I appreciated the service nonetheless). Food was also solid. I got the Garlic Noodles with Tiger Prawns and the prawns were cooked really well. The person I was with got the Green Curry and the texture of the tofu was incredible! Avoid the Thai Iced Tea. Tasted like cough syrup and had an even weirder aftertaste. I kept wanting to like it and it kept letting me down. This place has good vegetarian/vegan options. Their brown rice is quite tasty and they make most dishes with substitutes for traditional meat items. I will certainly come back, if only to modify or reinforce the rating given above.

There are a lot of reviews that knock on Ekamai. I've been to Thailand over 10 times and I like eating here because they do certain dishes very well (drunken noodles, pad sew, pad thai, Tom yum, laarb). All of their dishes lack the spice you'd find in Thailand, but the flavors are generally true to form and delicious. They've done a good job of balancing authentic flavor with something that fits the mainstream American diner. It is a bit expensive, but in spite of this it's my favorite thai place in Utah.

Last night my girlfriend and I realized that we needed some Thai food on our way home from work. This was around 9 PM and the downtown location that we usually go to was closed, so we decided to driver over to Sugarhouse and try this location out. This location is amazing, and offers more variety in food than the downtown one. We arrived a quarter to ten and decided to get our order to go. We told Woot (the owner) that we usually got Yellow Curry and Massamun Curry at the downtown location and so he recommended we try that out there. Because this is a full dinner menu, it's a little different than the selection at the downtown location. The Massamun Curry comes with a short rib of beef, potatoes, broccoli and carrots and the Yellow Curry is a chicken curry with potatoes and carrots. The food came out fast, and we were about to take off, when I noticed a nice looking hat in the display case. I asked the server about it and she got Woot, who then showed me all the different styles of hats and things that he had designed. Woot is a great owner, a great designer, and a really genuine person. You can see his passion for his work by how excited he gets talking about it. HIs restaurant and even the merchandise show that. I bought a hat and we were off to go eat our food at home. At home we unpackaged our food and began eating. The only small, small complaint I can think of is that the containers for the curry seemed a little weak. However, they were wrapped up very well in saran-wrap, so there wasn't any leakage or spills. I put the leftovers in tupperware because there was a crack in the styrofoam container. Everything about the food was amazing. I have always loved their downtown location, but somehow this one beat that. The flavors in the carrots of the Yellow Curry were simply amazing. The short rib of the Massamun Curry is so tender and juicy, and the flavors of both curries really go well with the brown rice. The portions are fairly large, and we were both full with enough leftover for another large meal each. All of what I ate last night was amazing, and we're both excited to go back and try out the rest of the menu. Ekamai has become our go to Thai restaurant, and I simply refuse to eat at any other.

This is one of the better Thai places in SLC and probably the very best in Sugarhouse. They'll spice things up for you, upon request, but if you don't request it your food won't be spicy at all. I've only eaten their food via delivery... yep, that's right, they Deliver! So I can't comment on the interior or service as a sit-down resto, but the ordering and delivery service are great. Every dish I've had from Ekamai has been a solid 3-4 star dish and the fact that they'll bring it to me in the comfort of my own home gives them the benefit of the doubt.

  • Anna S.

Best curry dumplings you will ever have. Mango sticky rice and the creme brûlée are worth every cent. I sometimes go there just for those.

    (5)
  • Natalie B.

Really good drunken noodles. In fact, the only drunken noodle I've had that is not overly greasy/saucy and they are very generous with the veggies. Just the right amount of spice and really flavorful. Pad Thai wasn't as much of a hit with me, so I always stick to drunken noodles.

Great Thai place, perfect for a quick lunch during the working week. Also, love the music they play in the background (not what you expect it to be).

  • Liz F.

This place rocks. I love the vibe here! It's vibrant, feels local and private-- the service is excellent, we had a large group and did wait long at all, never needed refills and all our questions about the menu were answered. The Drunken Noodle is insane-- the flavor explodes in your mouth. It was better than I had anticipated. I would order it next time without tomatoes but enjoyed the crunch of fresh broccoli, baby corn and onion. We had this dish with tofu, although I'm sure chicken or beef would be a tasty choice. I don't know that I could go and NOT have this dish. The yellow curry is really good. Not the best I've had, but sweet and completely satisfying. Any order NEEDS to come with their brown rice. It's hearty and perfectly cooked. I was shocked that I could enjoy rice all on its own, or combined with any of our dishes.

  • Myra P.

It's ok...pricey. $5 for a side of sticky rice?! hmmmm Larb is good but very small portions. My husband said the pad this was just ok, too sweet and a bit greasy. Friendly staff, down town good is better

So I read in the City Weekly in the Ekamai ad that they offered a lunch buffet. I called and asked how much it was, I was quoted $11.98 with tax and includes a drink. It's from 11 to 3. Great! If I can eat all the curry i want and coconut soup, well I am there! I was in the neighborhood so I tried it out. There is no parking but only street so You are fighting with Dodo's overage and Blue Boutique. Pain really. Now the food. meh at best. I mean nothing was labeled and everything but yellow curry and massaman were watery and some too fishy. Also those two dishes were the only warm ones. I asked the server if the buffet changes daily and she said yes. Then I got my bill for $12.98. Not worth it at all. You are better off going to any Thai place offering you two items for $8. It's going to be fresh and hot. My advice to the owner is lower the price especially for what you are offering. I would put the menu of buffet on line so people know what to expect if they choose to dine with you. Also make sure everybody is on the same page of price. I didn't say anything to the server and i paid but it didn't make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. I might try it again but as of now, can't recommend it.

I think this is hands down the best thai place in Slc. The prices are reasonable for the amount of food you get. Their pad thai is great and so is all their curry dishes. The yellow curry is sweeter than the green and red curry but they are all equally delicious. Their soups are very aromatic and the spices are perfect. You can pre place your order through yelp and choose a pick up time which is convenient and they always have it ready from the time I've asked to pick it up! Their menu is vast and I haven't tried anything I haven't enjoyed. This place is worth checking out.

Several weeks ago my roommates and I ordered delivery from Ekamai and I have never had such a horrible delivery experience. They said our food would be delivered in 20 minutes, which seemed too good to be true, but we live just down the street. An hour later we called to ask where our food was and their response was "we've had a lot of delivery orders" and said our food had not even left the restaurant yet. When asked when we would receive our food the lady on the phone said she would call her friend and find out where she was. Now my question is why is her friend delivering food for the restaurant? I let her know how upset we were and how unprofessional their delivery and their response was a free order of sticky rice. Wow, what a deal. About 30 minutes later we got our food which probably would have been decent if it weren't cold. Do not order delivery from here!

  • Marie S.

First and last time ordering from here. Got the massaman curry thinking for the price it must be good...well it was mostly sauce, with literally one hunk of meat, one piece of a quartered potato and one chunk of carrot. If it wasn't for the rice I would have starved to death.

This place is seriously the best. The food always tastes excellent and you can tell a lot of effort is put into the presentation of the dish. The service is polite and friendly, but it's a little overpriced.

Nice dishes! We enjoyed the drunken noodles, the delicious egg rolls, a clam dish and the nice sugarhouse bungalow feel. Slightly noisy due to 21st south but great service. We will be back!

The massamam (spelling) curry was absolutely amazing. Needed more peanuts, carrots, and potato though. I had it delivered. It came in good timing it was just frustrating when I got a all re-asking my address and the delivery girl could by find my place. It was 6 degrees out and I had to track her down. The whole point of delivery was so I didn't have to go outside. That was the only down side and stuff happens. The good was really good and the guy I spoke with on the phone who took my order was helpful!

Had the pad thai again and it was AWESOME! I would definitely recommend the dumplings as well. The coconut curry sauce that comes with them is so yummy!

Seriously the best take out EVER. We always order 2 of the 'Crying Tiger' - yes, a steak to go is amazing. We eat one for dinner and eat the other as steak and eggs in the morning. I don't think there is a thing we don't like on the menu. We eat from here regularly and are also very impressed by the service. Highly recommend this place!!

The best Thai I've had outside of London. (Never been to Thailand, but assume it's ideal.) Only slight imperfection was the street noise when sitting on the patio. Totally worth it for the food. Spicy is spicy. No excuses. And you can get in without waiting forever, even on a Saturday.

This is another that, perhaps due to proximity alone (but also because of a 50% off coupon that was on my fridge -- forgot it tonight, still on the fridge as I type), has been on our radar for a while. My wife is currently trying to fight off one of her worst colds in recent memory and is not up for cooking a great deal and I, just coming off of that same brutal thing and not super-interested in cooking most of the time anyway, elected to opt for take-out. One of the neat thing about Ekamai is that they will deliver. Don't really see that a whole bunch with restaurants in this area, so nice touch there. I didn't utilize it but after seeing the parking situation (cramped, like most of the other restaurants in this area, one thing I do NOT like about this part of town - Ekamai's is also mostly unmarked, outside of street parking), the value of this went up immensely. The place inside is unquestionably tiny and it doesn't take much to stack it. I'd put capacity at somewhere around 24 people and there's not a lot of spacing to be had. For all that, while this busyness unavoidably delayed my pick-up, I would be remiss not to note that all of the staff, including on the phone, were overwhelmingly nice. The servers here were uniformly very friendly. As other reviewers have mentioned, this place is a bit on the pricey side. I went with a couple appetizers, the calamari (typically a staple with me) and the Chicken Satay (another staple, though this one is mostly for Thai places) and she went with the Chicken Pad Thai or rather, she tried to do that. We wound up, somehow, with Tofu Pad Thai. They also didn't include any utensils at all, so I wound up having to use Satay skewers as makeshift chopsticks. Not a super-big deal: I've used worse in the past. I did not get the cucumber salad that was to have been with the Satay, either. Those are 3 very definite and avoidable errors in execution. She liked hers well enough, but didn't feel it was worth $12. For the Calamari, I liked it, but didn't love it and the quantity on the plate was not worth $9 and it was nothing but rings. The Chicken Satay I'd put towards the lower end of those that I've had, but it was cooked quite well. Again, not worth the money ($8), especially missing a component of the dish. What really shone for me were the sauces, minus the Peanut Sauce for the Satay. I was expecting a bit of heat and it was absent entirely. The sauce itself was also rather bland. The citrus sauce that came with the Satay as well, conversely, was a marvel, extremely tasty and well-executed. Equally interesting, but a bit of a step down, to my mind, was the spicy cilantro sauce that came with the calamari. Very inventive, I'd say, but it falls between the citrus lime sauce and the peanut sauce. On the other hand, when the best thing about a place is the sauces, unless they are truly exceptional and these do not rise to that level, it says a lot about a place. To sum, this place supports my contention that there are no bad Thai restaurants in the valley. While I feel you have to strain a bit to find a good Chinese restaurant, you would have to equally strain in the opposite direction to find a bad Thai place. For all its faults tonight, this is certainly not a bad one. It is, however, an overpriced one. My wife summed it up best when she said that better could be had for less money, which is where I'd put it also.

I'm going to try not to compare this place to its sister restaurant downtown--but in the end there are a few comparisons to be made. First, though, let's let it stand on its own merits. I love the setting of this restaurant. Sugar House is rad. This is very near to Sugar House Park, which is rad. And the restaurant is actually an old home converted into a restaurant space. Any guesses on my feelings about that? Ya.. rad. Inside you'll find limited seating, but it's oh so cozy. Like, this is a terrific spot for a date kind of cozy. Something special about the dim lights, unique layout, and the location. The food also carries that message. It's interesting--although not totally inventive--but the menu is also simple. One small sheet, and you pick your dish. It's classic Thai food, not fancy, but well composed. The service here was pretty casual, but still warm and friendly. It's waiter service, so you also need to plan on tip money. Prices are reasonable; middle of the road. And now, the inevitable comparisons to the downtown location: Two totally different concepts, really. The recipes are undoubtedly similar, but there are more options here than the 6 or so you get at the downtown space. This is obviously table service vs. downtown's counter service. And you'll pay a few more bucks here. But you still get their purple rice on both locales, and it's still tasty Thai no matter where you pick it up.

My wife and I live in the area and have driven by numerous times and decided to give it a try. Not much parking and it is very small but the patio overlooking sugarhouse park definitely helps. A small menu but still enough options to make you really have to decide what sounds best. All the food at all the other tables looked so delicious that compounded the decision. Ultimately with what we ordered, appetizers, entrees, desert, and drinks. I would think it would be hard not to enjoy whatever they bring out.

I've been to the smaller place by pioneer park and loved it. I really enjoyed the sit down version as well. Funky, intimate atmosphere. I had the drunken noodles, and they were really good. The service was just ok, but there is definitely a "lost in translation" that I can't really fault them for. The food came quickly, and drinks where refilled many times, just not a lot of banter(which is fine). Great relaxed date place, or grab a beer and diner after a ride. Will go there again soon

Fast service. Food came out promptly and steaming hot - and delicious. Simple menu with all the essentials. Small environment but adds to the charm of the place. So glad we followed the other yelp reviews and took a chance because it is now our go to Thai place! Highly recommend!!

Love this place. I'm a huge fan of pineapple curry meat dishes and they nailed it. The service has been great, they happily gave me an extra portion of rice. They offer WiFi. They kept up on refills. Everything was perfect. I hope to have many more lunches there.

This was my first Thai food experience and I loved it! I went with a bunch of other "experienced" women and they thoroughly enjoyed their meal as well. The best dish there is the Green Curry spaghetti dish. Can't wait to go back!

Food is great, costumer service is questionable. Made a small take out order for my office. When I picked it up to go boxes where stacked and tied tightly, when I got back to the office one order was wrong, I called to let them know I was going back to pick up corrected lunch order. The person who was working refused to accept that an error could of possibly been made on their end and then immediately jumped to his own defense saying that he would never swindle money (not sure what that had to do with anything) I have worked in food service and was trying to level with him that mistakes can be made and that all I needed was to get the lunch order remade correctly. He told me he couldn't just do that I would have to pay again for the food, or else he would be made to pay for the food out of his own pocket. To get on with our day I told him I would be paying for the lunch again but would never return. He seemed fine with the result and we went our separate ways

After spending a month in Thailand this year, my standards for Thai food are pretty high. Having been very disappointed by a few "Thai" places in the valley, Ekamai was recommend by a few of my friends for a better experience. I have to say, it IS the best in the valley I have had so far. I'm a die hard Massamun curry fan, but I normally have it with chicken as I tend to stay away from any other meat when it comes to Asian food. BUT! This place is definitely cause for exception! The short rib massamun currry, OH MY! It like your mom's Sunday beef stew with an Asian twist. Tender, juicy short rib, potatoes, carrots all swimming in curry sauce. Don't think about it, just do it. I also ordered the drunken noodles with chicken and no tomatoes (thanks previous Yelp reviewer) and they were also very tasty and good leftovers as well! I couldn't resist the mango sticky rice and that was delicious. The total bill came to around 42 bucks, which isn't cheap...but the massamun was 19 so that accounted for half of it. It is more than I would like to pay for Thai, but when you're desperate...price goes out the window!

I had their beef pad Thai to go. It was great - not mushy or dried out. I also had some edamame to tide me over and that was very odd - it was the most unevenly heated I've ever had. Some was heated up, other parts had pieces of ice on it. It was edamame, so it still tasted fine, but not very professional. So much food, I had enough leftovers for lunch for me and one of my kids.

The drunken noodles were good but pad Thai was bad. The shrimp seemed old and not fresh. Papaya salad was good too. Service is great but a little overpriced for just ok Thai. The restaurant is small so expect a long wait for dinner. We waited over an hour for a table for 3. As expected Sugarhouse parking is bad in this area. You basically have to park in the residential area and walk.

Ekamai Thai Sugarhouse is great. I've eaten here several times in the past few weeks and really enjoyed the food. The restaurant itself was a hip, modern vibe and the staff is always friendly. I met the owner, Woot, the last time I was there for lunch and he was very personable. For the record when it comes to Thai my tastes center around curries and my favorite is the yellow curry. Although I've eaten at Ekamai several times I have only had one dish, the yellow curry with chicken and veggies. I tend to be a creature of habit and when I find something I like I stick with it. The yellow curry at Ekamai is delicious and equally importantly perhaps, it is consistently delicious -- I have not been disappointed by any meals I've eaten here. Consistency is important to me because it shows that a restaurant knows what their doing and I know that when I eat at consistent restaurants I will always get a great meal for my money. When it comes to value I think Ekamai is a good value for the money and their portions are generous. Thee Ekamai lunch menu may be slightly more expensive then other Thai restaurants I've been to, but the quality of the food is worth the additional expense in my opinion. If you are looking for a new Thai place you should go here. Trust me! Go try Ekamai Thai and then come back and write your own review.

Portions are small and the taste doesnt do much to make up for it. Space is incredibly small and cramped. Inattentive waiters. Way overpriced. Prefer Sawadee.

I have yet to come to this location for lunch so this review is only for their dinner. Their prices are a little higher at this location but I also think that the quality and ambiance are better so it's worth it. Although, their main dishes are a little pricey for what I'd want to spend on an every day dinner. Of course my favorite dish is one of the most expensive, coming in at $18. But the crying tiger dish is lovely. It's a grilled rib eye served with asparagus, bell peppers, and broccoli. But what makes this dish go from "yum" to "wow" is the sauce. It's a spicy roasted rice and tamarin sauce that comes on the side. Supposedly it's crazy spicy but I think I've burnt my taste buds because while it's spicy, it's not THAT spicy to me. But it is delicious. I sometimes ask for extra sauce so I can put it on everything else. I'm a fan of the grilled shrimp salad that's on their starters menu. Plump juicy shrimp on a bed of greens with lemongrass dressing. But my favorite part of going to Ekamai is the family that owns it. Woot is so friendly and outgoing. He remembers everyone that walks in that door and treats you like a friend. His wife is often in the kitchen cooking and she's sweet. Plus, have you seen their two kids? Holy adorable. They come in pretty regularly and they're cute as can be. I felt like a creeper watching the oldest try to eat noodle soup with chopsticks but he was so cute I couldn't look away. Okay now I'm going off on some weird tangent. I promise I'm not a creep. Moral of the story is, check out this location and their dinner menu for something different than their downtown location! Say hi to Woot.

I'm trying to decide between 3 and 4 stars, but right now, I'm full of good Thai food, so let's round up! We tried my bookmarked Ekamai Thai for dinner yesterday. We arrived right at 5 because we had somewhere to be at 6, but were disappointed to find both doors locked. Eventually someone saw us and unlocked the door. We were obviously the only ones there and were shown to a small table right up against the wall, not even a table with a window. The entire 45 minutes that we were there, we were the only customers, so we didn't understand why they didn't seat us somewhere with a little more elbow room. There are two small aluminum tables in the restaurant that look like patio furniture and we were sitting at one of them. The table top is not large, but the base really is, so when you scoot up to the table, you bonk your knees. An odd choice for indoor dining. Matt wanted to move tables, but we never ended up doing it. The tables are set with votives and the hugging salt and pepper shakers that you can see in a lot of the yelp pictures- that was kind of different, as I don't think I have ever seen S&P in a Thai restaurant. The menu is not huge but is very intentional, if that makes sense. It offers a wide variety, definitely something for everyone. I went with the Drunken Noodle with tofu and my husband chose Pad See Ew with chicken. The entrees were out quickly and were a much smaller portion than most Thai restaurants I've been to. This is totally fine as we are not gluttons and don't need three meals worth of food in one sitting, but I thought the price was comparable to other Thai places without having leftovers for lunch the next day. Then I started eating and any concerns I had about the portion size went right out the window! Just as I was about to start raving, my husband said, "This is f-ing phenomenal!". It really was!! We mostly spent our dinner conversation talking about how good the food was! Our server, Wee, was super nice and attentive, which can be difficult sometimes when you're the only ones in a restaurant. After we paid, Matt was telling her how much we'd enjoyed our dinner and she brought out a few samples of their curry, which was super nice. I didn't try either since they were made with beef, but my husband said they were probably the best curry he'd ever tried. We'll definitely be back, though next time we'll speak up before being sat at a tiny metal table.

Yum! My friend and I came here and we split an appetizer and a dessert, each ordering our own courses. We started with the curry dumplings, which had a sauce that we wanted to drink off the plate. It was creamy, it was spicy, it was slightly sweet and bitter from what I assume was kaffir lime. I ordered the Khoa Soi Hor for my entree. It was a MASSIVE bowl of creamy curry broth with chicken and noodles. So good. For dessert, the mango and sweet sticky rice. We expected a few slices of mango, but it went all the way around. So much sweet mango to go with every bite of rice. I'll be back here again soon!

Tried this lovely joint when I met my mother for dinner. And although I normally need to consume MASSIVE amounts of alcohol to have dinner with my mother I was able to muscle through one without...because they do not have any. My mother got the cashew chicken because she believes this is the high point of culinary cuisine. I however ventured to the long lasting favorite yellow curry. When done right it is like eating hot ice. This is definitely one of my new favorite downtown places. They are very friendly and they are willing to help you any way they can. If this place is good enough for me to stay sober during a meal with my mother (sweet Father Odin I need a flagon of mead) then it should be perfect for a quick bite while you are downtown.

The waitress brought wrong entree (ordered ribs and got a steak) then did nothing when we told her about it so ended up paying for the wrong and more expensive dish. The calamari app is tiny. Everything is way overpriced. There are many better options in the area for authenticity....not to mention value.

I'm going to have to echo the bland wagon. Checked out dinner Wednesday night around 7pm and we were the only table. Service was prompt and the menu looked promising. We shared the drunken noodles and black pepper chicken with brown rice. The first problem I had was that our entrees were not very hot. Being the only table in the joint, I would think getting our food out piping hot would be a breeze. The flavors were ok but needed more spice, more of everything actually. The black pepper chicken was lacking as were the noodles. Definitely disappointed as we were told this noodle dish is one of their signature items. Left us not wanting more and while it wasn't terrible, for us, it's not worth repeating.

Not a huge fan of fancy Thai places - it's not the atmosphere I'm used to for thai. This is basically a fancy-ish restaurant serving thai and thai fusion. While my food was pretty good, they don't have the selection of other thai places for entrees. I wasn't super impressed but the food wasn't bad at all. They have limited options for choosing your spiciness as well.

  • Ann L.

Very good veggie roll and sticky rice with mango. All the curries were too hot for me. The staff were helpful and give me small amounts to taste. Lunch is really set up to be take-out with set daily specials. Dinner is designed to be a sit-down meal. There is no handrail on the front steps (converted building) but there is one handicapped space in back with a ramp into the building. Parking on the streets is limited by other businesses and the usual neighborhood parking by residents.

Love the downtown Ekamai. Ate here...was pretty disappointed. No greeting from employees, a female employee was super rude. I'll give it another try, though. Everyone has bad days, even businesses.

Placed a pick-up order for Larb Chicken, Tom Kha Kai, and Garlic Pepper Pork - first time getting food from Ekamai; here's the review: I enjoyed the food, but may experience may have been better eating at the restaurant due to presentation and things. Individual dish criticism: 1. Tom Kha Kai - I've had many amazing TKK/TKG soups in Dallas, and it's my favorite soup ever. As for Ekamia's I felt it was a little too rich with a heavy amount of coconut milk, and maybe missing kaffir lime leaf and galanga, but other than that; really tasty 2. Larb Chicken - good stuff; could have used a bit more of something crunchy like water cress and some ginger (more?). The chicken was lean and good, but maybe a fattier cut is better for lettuce wraps. Also, a bit much broth and the lettuce leaves were functionally a bit small for. Still a good dish 3. Garlic Pepper Pork - great flavor, and not overly salty or sweet, and the brown rice was awesome, although I would have enjoyed more veggies with it. Conclusion: Overall, pretty good Thai... I got hit with some of the great flavors; lemongrass, chili, mushrooms, etc. and it definitely satisfied my craving for some good Thai food. I gave it 4 stars because it could have been a notch higher on flavor/authenticity/fine tuning for the price.

I'm surprised to see these great reviews giving 4 stars. This place is THE BEST THAI in the Wasatch front. I was no fan of curry until I met Woot at the pioneer park location. Now I'm there at least once a week. Finally got back to SLC last week and came to the new location as soon as I could. I was excited to see a bunch of dishes the other location does not have. I went with what could be the best dish here the Massuman Curry. The ribs were falling off the bone tender, there was fat but you are eating ribs so what do you expect, fat gives lots of flavor. The wifey got chicken satay and it disappeared (she's prego), between her and my 6 yr old who will hardly ever eat chicken, within about 10 minutes hahaha. Let me explain why every 4 needs to be updated to a 5 star here. FIRST, the ambiance at Ekamai is awesome. Very well decorated and modern. Second, Woot, the owner, makes you feel at home and remembers you every time you walk into the place. He came out and we talked as if we were old buddies the whole time we waited for our food, he came again while eating and again after. Seriously, what place do you know of that try's to treat all the customers that way? Third, of course the food. Show me better Thai food in the Wasatch front is all I'm saying. Let's support Ekamai as they are a SLC business demonstrating the American Dream to a T. Do not pass up Ekamai, hit up pioneer park for lunch and hit up sugarhouse for a chill dinner. and get the mango and sticky rice for desert at either location I promise you will be happy you did.

I don't totally get the rave reviews of this spot. People seem excited about the ambiance and the food, but neither grabbed my attention. Basically, it's cute. The food is good. Decent drink list. But, portions are smaller than average for a Thai restaurant. Service is spotty. When I left, I crossed it off my list of restaurants to try, and left it off my list of restaurants to visit again. This is one of those places that I would deem a good "catch up chick place" for girls to gab over a glass of vino and some average fare. If you happen to be in Sugarhouse.

Everything about my experience at Ekamai was wonderful. The owner Woot was there and so kind, he made the experience that much more enjoyable. I would suggest ordering Entrees to share so that you can taste multiple items, because everything I have tried has been delicious. The Massamun Curry was what made me go back for the second time. The flavor is something that will leave you craving it. This time I also tried the Drunken Noodles and Prink Khing, which had just enough spice to it. Every dish we tried had a different flavor to it, and each was amazing. I have told all my friends and family about Ekamai, and all who have tried it have loved it just as much as I did. My new favorite Thai place. :)

Delicious! We especially loved the Coconut Soup -- in part because we had walked there on a freezing night. The atmosphere is nice and cozy and quieter than many places. The salmon dish and Drunken Noodles were very good also. I look forward to returning.

The food & service at this Sugarhouse location is the stuff that dreams are made of! Truly the Best, Best, Best I have had in years! The smiling attentive staff accent the taste-bud intriguing menu. If you want good food, excellent value and a warm welcome get over to Ekamai Thai!

What a pleasant surprise. I would say 'watch out' to the other Thai restaurants in town, this new Ekamai serves up some delicious Thai food, is priced right, great location and the service was fantastic ( not always an easy feat in SLC) . All of the dishes we had were excellent and very fresh, best part not drowning in oil as found in many Thai places. Give it a try.

Don't try to go at 2:30-2:45 because they are actually not still taking customers since they close at 3:00. Clearly 3:00 means they want to be cleaned up, locking the door and walking away. Will have to try to go back and test out the food. We went over to Dodo for lunch instead.

Sad... Tried to place an order on a Wednesday 5/22/13 at 7pm over the phone and no luck after two tries to call them. I've eaten at this restaurant before and found them delicious. My seafood/nut/avocado allergic husband has been able to find food he enjoys easily with no Epipen necessary despite me ordering two curries (I nom nom nom coconuts, if you were(n't) wondering). A great indication of being a sanitary place to eat. It's a fun place especially if you want to hang out in the park. There is something extra special about a picnic that I really love. Hopefully for me (SELFISH), the awesome location across from the park won't make them shy away from being a rocking delivery place. I will try to order again soon and see if I have a better experience. I really, really hope they become a staple since they are a delicious addition to the typical delivery. I am rooting for you! *Delivery now available! yay!

Forgettable, generic, average. Only thing that comes with the combo is one tiny spring roll. No veggies, just meat and potatoes. Not spicy when I asked for hot. And to top it off I'm still hungry - it wasn't enough food. Can I have my $10 back?

I ordered the Pad Thai with chicken. I must be honest, it wasn't the best Pad Thai I've ever had. The chicken was fine, the noodles tasted slightly odd, overall I was hoping for a little more variety in taste. It was so-so, didn't stand out to me. However, we also tried the Massaman curry, which I assure you is so unbelievably delicious. Really tender roast beef with tender carrots, onions, and potatoes. I was so impressed with it that I would gladly go back again just to experience that again. It came with a side of very tasty brown rice and went with the curry so perfectly!

In the top two best Thai restaurants in SLC. The other being Sawadee, in my opinion. The mussman (spelling?) is absolutely amazing. It is a must if you go. The Broadway location serves curry puffs that are addicting to say the least. Ambiance is cool at both locations, although very different.

Jut got back from eating here and I am super surprised at the high ratings. Really. So the place is pretty nice, you can eat outside across from Sugar House Park which is pretty cool. The service was very good. It took a little while to get the main courses, but it i a Friday night and it wasn't ridiculous wait times. And our sever made sure to stay on top of our drinks so we never felt like were forgotten. On to the food! I will preface this by saying everything had a common theme. It wasn't bad by any means, but it is just so bland. I am not some Thai expert, but I expect some genuine, and often times weird or intense, flavors to pop out. But not once did I feel at all like this. For an app we got Larb Chicken. Just...bland. The chicken was kind of dry and I guess had a hint of lime. It is weird to say the chicken was dry because there was so much broth on the plate and coming out of the lettuce as you ate, so not sure what's going on there. My wife got the Drunken Noodle and it was bland. Most definitely not drunk or even buzzed. I think the noodles are made in house, or they appear that way, so that's pretty awesome. I got the Pad Thai with tofu because I wanted to try their chili tamarind sauce. Guess what I thought of it? Bland. Actually, it just tasted like soy sauce, which is so very strange. No chili or tamarind to be hinted at. The tofu had some paprika on it, but that was about it. The tofu itself was cooked very well though. I should note that my wife had a whole different experience. She loved her dish and everything else. So, maybe I am just overly critical. Tl;dr: Nice location. Bland food, but apparently that's a very subjective view. Good service. Good prices. Might as well try it and see what you think, but I personally feel no need to return.

About two months ago, I stumbled upon Ekamai in Sugarhouse. I know the area really well and never realized it was even right there on 2100 south. My boyfriend now, took me on our first date here. Already a memorable place, the food gets better and better every time, our service is nothing short of excellent, the atmosphere is fun and relaxed, and to top it off the place is owned by a great guy! I have never felt so comfortable and lucky to have found such a great place to dine in class and comfort! Leigh, one of the waitresses, always welcomes us with a smile and is super sweet to the fullest. The owner introduced himself to us a few weeks ago, making sure we were 100% satisfied with the food and service. We invited and insisted him to join us for a quick chit chat and he humbly sat down with us. After talking to him for about 15 minutes, he shook our hands and thanked us for our business and company. Where to even start with the food... so when I find something I like... I stick with it. I mean REALLY stick with it and don't try anything else on the menu. After ordering the drunken noodles on the first visit and falling in LOVE with the amazing flavor, I stuck with it for a month. Their food is not the cheapest, however, it is worth every penny. Over the past few weeks, I have braved on to trying the massuman curry, short ribs, thom ka soup, salmon, and a few others. Each dish is so differently specific in their rich and enticing flavors that I am dedicated to trying everything on the menu now! I'm glad to say that this is our absolute favorite restaurant in Salt Lake City! I've never had a "go-to" restaurant, but this is definitely it!

I love Thai food. I am visiting from Seattle and I have to say Ekamai was one of the best Thai restaurants I've been to. The service was also amazing. I had the Red Curry Chicken, and my daughter had Cashew Nut Chicken. My son in law had Chicken with Oyster sauce. It was all SO good. I don't know how they make their brown rice but it was out of this world. I will rate 5 stars as this was a wonderful dining experience! I noticed one review said they had no alcohol. I did have a glass of wine with my dinner.

Ive been here about 6 times and each time the food gets better. Not just your traditional every-day thai place (thank you)! Please open on Monday!

The food is so bland. I've been here three times now because it's within walking distance of my house, and each time the food is awful. My husband's dishes have been just as bad. I'm giving two stars rather than one because the service is good. I will not be coming back.
